Michelle Handelman
creates fantastical story structures using fragmented surreal characters
and microcosms. Loud, eclectic, colourful, and unconventional characters point their fingers
laughing and mocking before throwing themselves into their hedonistic experimental worlds.
The pieces are provocative and aesthetic feasts for the senses.
After her studies of fine art at the San Franscico Art Institute (1989) and Bard College (2001)
Michelle Handelman has performed and exhibited widely at galleries, museums, and festivals,
both in the US as well as internationally, such as at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Performa
Festival 05 in New York, and the Flash Art Fair in Milan. Her work has been supported by prizes
and grants. Since 1995 she has been teaching fine arts at different art schools on the East and
West coasts of the US. Michelle Handelman lives and works in New York.
