Aseel AlYaqoub

Aseel AlYaqoub (*1986, Kuwait) ist ein Künstler, der in den Disziplinen Geschichte, Architektur und kulturelle Identitätstheorie arbeitet. Ihre Praxis beschäftigt sich mit Themen der Nationalität, des Staatsapparats und der kollektiven Nostalgie, um herauszufinden, warum einige historische Elemente gut in die nationale Erzählung passen, während andere bewusst vergessen werden. Mit einer ständig wachsenden Sammlung von Fundstücken, Dokumenten und Medien erforscht ihre Arbeit das Konstrukt neuer Nationen wie Kuwait. Durch Video, Zeichnungen, Installationen und Druckgrafik dokumentiert sie die Prozesse der Selbstidentifikation und Staatsbildung der Nation – die unter Druckkochtopfbedingungen stattfanden – postimperiale Auflösung und Wiederverbindung.

Dieser Film versucht, eine chaotisch und komplexe Erzählung unter Verwendung von vorhandenem Archivmaterial in den Fokus zu rücken und dabei einige Fragen aufzuwerfen, ob sich eine ständig bedrohte Nation auf friedliche diplomatische Bemühungen konzentrieren, ihr Militär stärken oder beides stärken sollte.

Culture Fair, 2018

„Kulturmesse“ konzentriert sich auf einen Dialog mit der Verwendung von Bildern und Ereignissen des Landes während der Goldenen Ära (ca. 1940-1980). Beim Sammeln von kuwaitischen Briefmarken untersucht die Künstlerin die visuell gedämpfte und diskrete Natur der ausgestellten Propaganda. Die Erzählungen alter Briefmarken werden neu konfiguriert, indem die Schichten seziert und neu zusammengesetzt werden, wodurch das nationale Artefakt und das nationale Bild mit einer alternativen Erzählung zerstört werden, die als kulturelle Relikte normalerweise auf Weltausstellungen gezeigt wird.

Desperate Measures, 2017

8 min video, DIY gas mask

Während des Golfkriegs erlebte Kuwaitis irakische Soldaten mit Gasmasken, was Gerüchte über einen möglichen chemischen Angriff entfachte. In einer verzweifelten Reaktion verteilte der kuwaitische „Untergrundwiderstand“ (al-moqawama) Formeln für DIY-Gasmasken durch Flugblätter und Mundpropaganda. In der 8-minütigen Videoperformance „Semiotics of War in the Kitchen“ versucht die Künstlerin, eine Gasmaske nachzubauen – in derselben Küche, in der ihre Familie während des Krieges die DIY-Versionen fabrizierte – nach den Anweisungen ihrer Mutter.

Diese Ausstellung ist ein Blick auf die Vergangenheit Kuwaits und wie sie in die Gegenwart auftaucht und nutzt die Nostalgie als Instrument des kritischen Denkens und nicht die Sehnsucht nach der Vergangenheit. Historische Narrative werden durch die Zerstörung und Wiederzusammenfügung nationaler Artefakte neu konfiguriert, um die Abhängigkeit einer Nation in Form neuer Produkte hervorzuheben.
