Nadja Verena Marcin beschäftigt sich mit Psychologie und menschlichem Verhalten durch eine interdisziplinäre Analyse von Feminismus und emotionaler Architektur. Ihre Arbeiten wurden weltweit in der Fridman Gallery (NY), im ICA Philadelphia (PA), im Garage Museum (Moskau) und im ZKM Museum (Karlsruhe) gezeigt. Marcin erhielt Stipendien des New York State Council for the Arts, des Franklin Furnace (NY) und der Film- und Medienstiftung (Düsseldorf). Sie hat ein Fulbright- und ein MFA-Stipendium der Columbia University und war Dozentin am Wellesley College (MA), am Int. Center for Photography (NY) und wurde in HuffPost, Hyperallergic und Artnet News besprochen.

#SOPHYGRAY
Installation & Performance, Mixed Media (Audio Bot App, Tablet, Tablet-Ständer, Videoprojektionen auf Sockeln, Mini-Bibliotheken, 29 Bücher), 25-50 qm, 2021-2024
#SOPHYGRAY ist eine feministische Audio-Bot-App, die Fragen auf überraschende, philosophische und humorvolle Weise beantwortet, die von intersektionalen feministischen Perspektiven geprägt sind. Präsentiert als immersive Installation und Performance im Ausstellungskontext - und als App für mobile Geräte - hinterfragt sie-/er-/es Annahmen über virtuelle Assistenten (Alexa, Siri) und ihre typisch weiblich klingenden, unterwürfigen Stimmen, die oft Stereotypen, Geschlechterrollen und Machthierarchien verstärken und die Kultur widerspiegeln, die sie entwickelt hat, sowie die Auswirkungen im Alltag: die verzerrte Darstellung von Frauen in den Medien und die Objektivierung, die mit der Nutzung von geschlechtsspezifischen Technologien einhergeht.
Die App wurde während des EMAP- Residency im Onassis Stegi in Athen 2022-2023 entwickelt und ist jetzt für mobile Geräte im iOS App Store und als Demo online unter sophygray.com erhältlich. Sie wird in einer immersiven Installation präsentiert - unabhängig oder zusammen mit einem Performance-Event. Oft wird sie von einem Workshop mit lokalen Teilnehmern als feministische Bot-Entwickler begleitet, die zur ständig wachsenden Bibliothek des Bots beitragen. Der Prototyp der App wurde 2021 uraufgeführt, die Performance 2022, die App 2023.

2. OPHELIA
OPHELIA ist eine Performance und Videoinstallation, die Shakespeares Ophelia als Verkörperung der menschlichen Subjektivität im Kontext von Klimawandel und Geschlechterungleichheit neu interpretiert. Während der Performance hält Marcin einen Vortrag über die Figur Ophelia, die Zerstörung der Biosphäre und die Geschichte der weiblichen Hysterie, wobei sie Verbindungen zwischen der Zerstörung der Natur und der Unterdrückung von Frauen herstellt. Mit einer Atemmaske klettert sie in einem weißen Kleid auf einem Stahlgestell in ein Aquarium, schwebt unter Wasser und rezitiert das Gedicht The Werld (1939) des russischen Schriftstellers Daniil Kharms. Die verzerrten Worte und die Luftblasen werden über Hydrophone und umliegende Lautsprecher in den Raum übertragen.

In der Ausstellung zeigt der Stahlrahmen, der nun eine Box mit Videomonitoren trägt, dasselbe Bild der anmutig im blauen Wasser treibenden Künstlerin - begleitet von der hörbaren Rezitation des Gedichts, bei der jedes Wort deutlich gesprochen wird. Diese beiden Neuinterpretationen versetzen Ophelia ins 21. Jahrhundert, indem sie Elemente des ikonischen Gemäldes von Millais (1852-3) als Hintergrundkulisse integrieren, während sich der Fluss in die Architektur des Wassertanks verwandelt. Die poetische Erzählung thematisiert die subjektive menschliche Wahrnehmung und das Gefühl, in der Existenz gefangen zu sein. Die isolierte Figur der Ophelia, deren Lebensunterhalt von der künstlichen Beatmung abhängt, sinniert über die Kostbarkeit des Lebens und der Natur, unsere Abhängigkeit von der Technologie und die Verwundbarkeit des Einzelnen angesichts einer mächtigen Antwort der Natur.
